GUIDE: What's on in cinemas in Ireland between Christmas and New Year?

Trips to the cinema are a guaranteed good time at every time of year, and Christmas is no exception.

You may prefer to watch a TV blockbuster sitting by the fire with a hot toddy, but if you'd like a break from Christmas chaos around the house, why not pop to the cinema? Sneak in a box of Quality Street and a flask of hot chocolate and you'll feel right at home - minus the madness!

There's plenty on between Christmas and New year, whether you'd prefer a fantasy action thriller, a historical epic or a traditional festive flick. Cinemas also offer a range of classic Christmas movies - including The Snowman, Home Alone and Elf, among others - during this time (check local listings for information).

Here are nine films on nationwide over the next two weeks:

Wonka

Starring Timothee Chalamet as the famous candy maker, 'Wonka' follows young chocolatier Willy Wonka as he aims to change the world armed with nothing but chocolate and a hatful of dreams.

You can watch it all the way up to Christmas Eve (December 24) in most cinemas.

The Marvels

'The Marvels' follows Captain Marvel (Brie Larson) as she shoulders the burden of a destabilised universe.

When her duties send her to an anomalous wormhole linked to a Kree revolutionary, her powers become entangled with that of Jersey City super-fan, Kamala Khan aka Ms. Marvel, and Carol’s estranged niece, now S.A.B.E.R. astronaut Captain Monica Rambeau.

Together, this unlikely trio must team-up and learn to work in concert to save the universe.

December 19 is the last day to watch this film in most cinemas.

Wish

The latest installation from Disney, 'Wish' is a new musical comedy set in the magical kingdom of Rosas, where sharp-witted idealist Asha makes a wish so powerful that it is answered by a cosmic force called Star.

Together, Asha and Star confront a most formidable foe - the ruler of Rosas, King Magnifico - to save her community and prove that when the will of one courageous human connects with the magic of the stars, wondrous things can happen.

You can watch the film at most cinemas up until December 21.

Napoleon

Starring Oscar winner Joaquin Phoenix, 'Napoleon' is a spectacle-filled action epic that details the checkered rise and fall of the iconic French Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte.

It shows his relentless journey to power through the prism of his addictive, volatile relationship with his one true love, Josephine.

The last showing at most Irish cinemas is on December 21.

Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes

A prequel to the Hunger Games films, 'The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes' stars Peter Dinklage and Viola Davis and tells the tale of post-war Panem 64 years before Katniss Everdeen volunteered as tribute.

It follows a young Coriolanus Snow who is the last hope for his failing lineage, the once-proud Snow family that has fallen from grace following the war. With his livelihood threatened, Snow is reluctantly assigned to mentor Lucy Gray Baird, a tribute from the impoverished District 12.

Battling his instincts for both good and evil, Snow sets out on a race against time to survive and reveal if he will ultimately become a songbird or a snake.

You can watch the film in most cinemas up until December 21.

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom

DC's tale about the ruler of the seas is back for a sequel, with Jason Momoa reprising his role as Aquaman for 'The Lost Kingdom'.

When an ancient power is unleashed, Aquaman must forge an uneasy alliance with an unlikely ally to protect Atlantis, and the world, from irreversible devastation.

It hits most cinemas on December 21 (most blockbuster films have a run of approximately three weeks).

Anyone But You

In 'Anyone But You', starring Glen Powell and Sydney Sweeney, Bea and Ben look like the perfect couple, but after an amazing first date something happens that turns their fiery hot attraction ice cold - until they find themselves unexpectedly thrust together at a destination wedding in Australia.

So they do what any two mature adults would do: pretend to be a couple.

This film lands in cinemas across Ireland on December 26.

Ferrari

'Ferrari' tells the story of ex-racer Enzo Ferrari as he faces bankruptcy, which threatens the factory he and his wife, Laura, built from nothing ten years earlier. Their volatile marriage has been battered by the loss of their son, Dino, a year earlier, and Ferrari struggles to acknowledge his other son, Piero, with Lina Lardi.

Meanwhile, his drivers’ passion to win pushes them to the edge as they launch into the treacherous 1,000-mile race across Italy, the Mille Miglia.

It hits cinemas on December 26.

Next Goal Wins

Starring Irish actor Michael Fassbender and American actor Will Arnett, 'Next Goal Wins' tells the story of the American Samoa soccer team, who suffered the worst loss in World Cup history, losing to Australia 31-0 in 2001.

With the 2014 World Cup approaching, the team recruits a down on his luck, maverick coach to help turn their fate around.

You can watch the film in cinemas from December 26.
