Callout for volunteers for Farranrory Wind Farm Community Benefit Fund Committee

Farranrory community members are being encouraged to apply to have their say in how a brand new funding stream will be distributed in the locality.

The new Community Benefit Fund, linked to Farranrory Wind Farm, will become operational towards the end of 2026, bringing a welcome injection of funding to be distributed annually to support local projects such as sports clubs, schools and community groups.

A Fund Committee is now being established by the company behind the wind farm, made up of volunteers from the local community, to oversee the distribution of these grants.

“This fund will deliver a long-term, positive impact in Farranrory and the surrounding areas, with a focus on promoting sustainability, community development, education, and local well-being,” said Nadine O’Sullivan, Community Liaison Administrator with Ørsted, the company behind the wind farm.

“A significant sum of money will be available each year to invest back into the local community and in the future of the locality around Farranrory, in which we are proud to work.”

The successful applicants will be part of an influential decision-making body, as the allocation of funds to successful initiatives will be approved by the Committee, ensuring a transparent and collaborative approach so that the funding truly reflects local needs and priorities.

The size of the Community Benefit Fund is dictated by the energy production of the wind farm. This is calculated as €2 per megawatt-hour of generation. Once fully operational, the 43MW Farranrory Wind Farm will generate enough energy to power the equivalent of 25,000 homes.

Applications to be a member of the Fund Committee will be open until May 1st. Local residents, representatives of community organisations or schools, and community-minded individuals are encouraged to apply.

No prior experience is required, just a passion for your community and a commitment to fairness and transparency, with training and support provided.
