Kneecap director takes home Bafta Award for Outstanding Debut by a director

The director and co-writer of hugely popular Irish-language film, Kneecap, Rich Peppiatt has won a Bafta for Outstanding Debut by a British writer, Director or producer at the awards ceremony on Sunday evening.

The film was nominated in six categories at the Baftas including Best Original Screenplay, Film Not in the English Language, and Best British Film.

The Irish hip-hop trio made up of Mo Chara, Móglaí Bap and DJ Próvaí took to the read carpet along the film's director, Rich Peppiatt.

Speaking to an RTÉ reporter at the red carpet, Móglaí Bap said:

"I think the fact that were at a British Film Awards as an Irish language film, and what the film represents, the topics it talks about, language revival and about communities, I think it sends a strong message."

DJ Próvaí says:
"The reason we're here, it gives us a chance to highlight the Irish language on a bigger scale."
Speaking when winning the award director Rich said:
"Wow, I'm absolutely honoured to be standing here."

"Fifteen years ago today, I actually met my wife - and a decade later she convinced me to move to Belfast. And within two weeks of moving to Belfast, I met Kneecap - and now I'm standing here! And it's weird how life works like that"

This awards comes just after Rich Pippiatt recently received his Irish citizenship.
