Carrick-on-Suir St Vincent de Paul’s annual schools Christmas food appeal delivered €5,500 worth of food hampers and vouchers and fuel to the elderly, families and single people in the town and its hinterland.

The appeal was run by the St Nicholas/St Molleran’s Conference of St Vincent de Paul in conjunction with 12 local secondary and primary schools and Kildalton Agricultural College in Piltown.

The Conference, founded at the height of the Great Famine in 1847, wrote to all the schools in the locality to see if they could come up with fundraising ideas for the appeal.

The response was overwhelming with over €5,500 raised by the schools and agricultural college. This money was used to provide over 95 food hampers, food vouchers and solid fuel to local people in need.

Conference President Michael Lonergan thanked the staff and students in all the schools involved in the campaign and congratulated them on their “magnificent effort” in raising funds for the appeal.

“The effort and initiative shown by the young people in our schools has to be commended and we in the Conference are very grateful for all their hard work and support,” he said.
