Council seeks funds to repair Carrick-on-Suir's Old Bridge that's in 'sorry looking state'

Tipperary County Council says it is working to secure funding to repair Carrick-on-Suir's Old Bridge, which is described as being in a “sorry looking state” due to structural damage caused by vehicles striking the historic river crossing.

This was how Carrick-on-Suir Municipal District Engineer Michael Scully described the condition of the stone bridge at the monthly meeting of the district’s councillors after Cathaoirleach Cllr David Dunne requested an update from council management on repairing the damage.

Cllr Dunne said the Old Bridge was “starting to look ugly” and referred to the barriers erected around the damaged section of the River Suir crossing over which an one-way traffic system operates.

Mr Scully said the parapet on the corner of the bridge was hit twice by vehicles. The council tried to follow up and find out who the culprits were but hadn’t been successful.

“In the meantime, we have undertaken a structural survey on it and have to now secure funding.

“It’s unsightly and it can't be left the way it is. We are trying to get funding for the bridge. We have had a contractor look at it so we have all the ducks lined up,” Mr Scully added.
