Two Carrick-on-Suir streets to close next week as new phase of regeneration scheme begins

Two busy Carrick-on-Suir town centre streets will be temporarily closed for a number of months starting next week to facilitate their upgrade as part of the €2.9m second phase of the town’s regeneration scheme.

Tipperary County Council has given notice that Chapel Street and William Street in Carrick will close from 7.30am next Tuesday, February 3 until 5pm on Friday, July 31 to enable contractors to revamp the streetscapes of both thoroughfares.

A public notice outlining the street closures and associated traffic diversions in the town is published at the bottom of this page along with a second notice announcing the council’s intention to close Castle Lane and the North Quay in Carrick (east of Dillon Bridge) between 7.30am on Monday, March 2 and 5.30pm on Friday, May 22.

The proposed closure of Castle Lane and North Quay is also to facilitate road improvement works associated with this latest phase of the Carrick Regeneration Scheme.

The streetscape of part of Castle Street will also be revamped as part of this phase of the project.

Tony Kirwan Civil Engineering Ltd. is the contractor and the works will include construction of new road carriageway, new footpaths, new public lighting, line marking and associated landscaping.

The council says services and utilities will also be upgraded to support the current and future needs of these streets.

Carrick Municipal District councillors were informed of the impending street closures starting after the bank holiday weekend by District Administrator Marie Cox in her report on the progress of the €17.9m Carrick Regeneration Scheme at their monthly meeting last Thursday.

Ms Cox said the contractor had been engaging with Chapel Street and William Street residents and there were some queries concerning access to St Nicholas Church.

She stressed public access to the church will be fully retained through side doors.

She said the contractor has a liaision person appointed to engage with the residents on any issues.

“It will be worth it in the end to have the new streetscape,” she said in reference to the disruption while the works are underway.

Carrick Cllr Kieran Bourke said he had been hugely concerned about people being kept informed about the works but he shouldn’t have been worried as the District Administrator and contractor are doing a great job.

“When people come and look for information they are being listened to and dealt with in a timely, prompt manner, he said.

Ms Cox also updated councillors on the progress of another Carrick Regeneration Scheme project – the €1.05m transformation of Carrick’s old Post Office building on Main Street into a digital and enterprise working hub.

She said new windows have been installed in the building and the project is expected to be ready for hand over by the end of the first quarter of this year.
