Tipperary County Council has been urged to seek funding to purchase and install outdoor exercise equipment for adults in Carrick-on-Suir by one of the town’s councillors.

Cllr Kieran Bourke received a positive response from the council’s Healthy County Coordinator Eoin Kaar when he issued the appeal at Carrick-on-Suir Municipal District’s monthly meeting.

The call was made by the Fianna Fáil councillor after Mr Kaar gave a presentation to the district’s councillors and officers about Healthy Ireland initiatives in the county.

Cllr Bourke outlined that a funding application for outdoor exercise equipment for adults for his hometown was submitted during the days of Carrick Town Council on foot of a motion he tabled at a council meeting on the issue. Unfortunately the application was knocked and got nowhere.

The Fianna Fáil councillor asked Mr Kaar how to go about securing funding for this type of exercise equipment as he argued it would be a great addition to activities going on in the town.

Cloneen based Fine Gael Cllr Mark Fitzgerald supported Cllr Bourke’s call. “I walk in Fethard Town Park where they have all that outdoor equipment and it’s great to see the public utilising it,” he said.

Mr Kaar responded that the council had supported the provision of several small pieces of such outdoor exercise equipment in Cahir and could do the same in Carrick-on-Suir if the need was identified.

“I would be happy to support you in that. In Cahir, we partnered with the local gym and created a suitable exercise programme. We could do the same in Carrick-on-Suir.”

He invited Cllr Bourke to reach out to him and he would see how he could support him in advancing the project.
