The Council took to Facebook to express their condolances following Fr Egan's passing, paying tribute to his good nature and kind character.

They said: "A deep sense of profound sadness was felt by everyone this morning as news filtered through of the sad passing of our Parish Priest Very Rev Fr Jim Egan.

"Even though Fr Jim had been recovering from illness and had not been ministering in the parish for a while, he, and us all, had always hoped to have him back into the parochial house and back to where he wanted to be. Unfortunately, it wasn't to be.

"It was our privilege to work with Fr Jim over the years. Knockavilla Community Council we would like to offer our deepest sympathies to Fr Jim's family, his fellow priests, to Archbishop Kieran O Reilly and his wide circle of friends.

"We would like to invite all parish groups and parishoners to a public meeting which will be held in Knockavilla Community hall tomorrow Sunday immediately after mass to organise catering, stewarding etc for the two days.

"If you can help in any way, please drop in.

"May Fr Jim rest in eternal peace."
