A Clonmel councillor has called on Tipperary County Council to investigate securing a Re-Turn machine for the county to take large quantities of plastic bottles and cans together but the Council says it’s not responsible for providing this equipment.
At the Council’s September meeting, Fianna Fáil Cllr Siobhán Ambrose urged the local authority to look into establishing a bulk recycling machine for taking plastic bottles and cans similar to one located at Kelly’s Newcastle Service Station in county Dublin.
She said a number of people have raised the proposal with her due to the queues at existing machines where bottles and cans have to be fed in individually.
“We are all aware of these machines where you end up waiting half a day to put them in. These bulk machines allow you to put the whole lot in together and literally gives you your docket in a second.”
The Council’s Environment & Climate Action Services Director Eamon Lonergan agreed there was a need for these bulk Re-Turn scheme machines due to the queues , which he noted was a sign of the scheme’s success.
He said the Government has committed to rolling them out but the Council wasn’t responsible for providing them. The contracts were directly with the retailers where the machines are located.
