Ireland's traditional homesteads will be subject of Tipperary museum's next lecture

Tipperary Museum of Hidden History in Clonmel

The next lecture in Tipperary Museum of Hidden History's Beyond Belief series, The Vernacular House - Nerve Centre of Irish Tradition takes place in Tipperary County Council Civic Offices in Clonmel this Saturday, January 10 at 10.30am.
The lecture in the council chamber will be given by Dr Barry O'Reilly.
Admission costs €10 (please pay cash at the door) and includes tea/coffee and a scone afterwards.
Ireland's vernacular houses embody an immense volume of folklore, custom and belief. While providing shelter, they were also a portal between the human and supernatural worlds.
Protecting the ‘luck’ of the family, their homestead, animals and crops, meant never-ending vigilance, especially at key turning points of the traditional year.
Our vernacular houses also embrace the community and its values and connect us with the deep past and with other cultures.
This talk will focus strongly on the kitchen as the ‘nerve centre’ of traditional family life, and on the supreme importance of the hearth.
