LATEST: Planning permission granted for major works on Tipperary wastewater plant

Uisce Éireann welcomes the announcement that planning permission has been granted for a major upgrade to Kilsheelan’s wastewater treatment plant, bringing a significant boost to the village’s infrastructure and future growth.

This essential project will increase wastewater treatment capacity by 50% to support existing and future development in the local community, while also delivering key infrastructure to protect the local environment and ensure compliance with Irish and EU legislation.

James Browne TD, Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage, welcomed the project: “This is positive news for the community of Kilsheelan. Upgrading the wastewater infrastructure in the area will strengthen treatment capacity and ensure the infrastructure needed to support the area’s development.

“Public water and wastewater services is essential to facilitating housing delivery as reflected in our new Housing Action Plan, Delivering Homes, Building Communities. Continued investment is also essential to sustain and improve existing water infrastructure in local communities That is why in the recent Budget and through the National Development Plan we have increased Uisce Éireann’s funding to accelerate sustainable management of our water infrastructure.”

The delivery of the project includes modernisation of treatment processes on site bringing the population equivalent from 1000 to 1500, a new storm water management system, new inlet works, upgrade of the existing control building including a rainwater harvesting system and installation of solar panels for on-site energy generation.

Angus Hall, Uisce Éireann Programme Manager, said: “We can now forge ahead with the upgrade of wastewater infrastructure in Kilsheelan to unlock much needed growth and development. We have developed plans to provide more efficient and sustainable treatment of wastewater while increasing capacity by 50%. This project will play a key role in protecting the local environment, including the River Suir, and support the area’s future growth and development.”

With planning permission now secured, Uisce Éireann will move forward with finalising the design and prepare for tendering of the construction phase of the project.

This project is part of Uisce Éireann’s ongoing multimillion euro investment in upgrading the wastewater infrastructure across County Tipperary, including recently completed projects in Newport, Ballina, and Cahir; as well as ongoing upgrades at Fethard and Nenagh where planning permission was recently granted.

Site investigations on the network in Thurles are also underway while planning is also under review for Grangemockler.
