South Tipperary Hospice has promised that a €10,000 donation from the Rotary Club of Clonmel will be put to the best possible use.

The money was raised in the lead-up to Christmas at the Rotary Club’s Remembrance Trees at Dunnes, Davis Road; Dunnes, Oakville, and O’Connell Street.

The cheque was presented to Hospice representatives Liz Binchy and Maud Shee by Rotary president, Richie Molloy, at a function in Cluain Restaurant.

Also present was Mayor of Clonmel, Cllr Pat English, who had contributed €500 to the final figure from his Mayor’s Fund.
Liz Binchy thanked the club for its continued support for Hospice.

She said Hospice is going from strength to strength, with services including voluntary drivers, support groups, counselling, therapy and the recently established bereavement support group for children and young adults aged 4 to 18.

“This is a fantastic amount of money and we really appreciate it. You can be sure that it will be put to very good use,” Ms Binchy added.

She also thanked project chairman Tom Duggan for the huge amount of time and effort he puts into organising the Remembrance Tree each year.

Club president Richie Molloy echoed those sentiments, pointing out that the Christmas collection was the club’s biggest fundraiser of the year and its success was due in no small part to the commitment of Tom Duggan.

He also thanked the people of Clonmel and surrounding areas who were so generous in their contributions when placing a ribbon on the trees to remember loved ones at Christmas. He said that their support allowed such a significant donation to be made to Hospice.

Mayor English congratulated both the Rotary Club and the Hospice movement for the fantastic work that both organisations are doing in Clonmel. Long may it continue, he said.
