A Spar store in Carrick-on-Suir near Waterford has discovered 80 euro worth of fake notes brought in amid a gardai investigation on October 16th.
An employee in the store said that a total of 80 euro of fake notes were discovered all from one customer.
The employee said that the fake notes were first discovered when he went to the local bank to deposit money from the store.
This was when a fake ten euro note was spotted.
"I came back to the shop, and I informed the manager, there is a fake 10 euro note, please have a look at all the notes in the till, the man before also came in with a fake 50 euro....he got some beers....he is a regular man, he regularly comes into the shop, and suddenly he bought more than what is expected, the beers, you know, and there was a young employee of ours.... she was a kind of a new, about 18 years old, and she doesn't know about checking the money, I believe...."
"So she took the money from him, and then when the same man came back again later we realised the note was fake, and we denied to do the sales for him....we identified the 50 euro from before was his and it was fake, and two other 10 notes were there as well, so 70 euro in the till, and that 10 euro that I spotted at the bank...
"So it's 80 euro we have identified from the man that is fake, and with the receipt and everything, they got all the CCTV cameras, and we have informed the Garda about the situation, and Gardai came to the shop, and he has taken all the notes and everything, reports, and he just went back to see is there anything that he can do, and we are still waiting for his analysis", the employee said.

The Spar employee said that this was their first incident where they have identified a man using fake notes in their store.
The store issued a warning on Facebook to warn people and other stores in the Carrick-on-Suir area about the circulation of fake notes.
"We need the money back, that's all we need, we don't want to escalate the situation into the further, as long as if we give our money back, whatever the 70-80 Euro, then it should be fine for us, you know," the employee said.
An Garda Siochana investigating this incident said in a statement:
"Gardaí received a report of an incident involving counterfeit notes at a commercial premises in Carrick-on-Suir, Co. Tipperary on Thursday evening 16th October 2025 at approximately 7:40pm.
Investigations are ongoing".
