An Garda Síochána have hit back at widespread rumours a number of local gardaí have been suspended from duty over criminal activity.

In a statement, An Garda Síochána Tipperary said: "An Garda Síochána is aware of a significant degree of misinformation circulating online alleging that multiple members attached to Cahir Garda Station have been suspended from duty due to criminal behaviour.

"These allegations are false and damaging to the hard-working Gardai serving the public in the Tipperary South Community Engagement Area.

"An Garda Síochána can confirm that there are currently no Gardaí suspended from duty in relation to any incidents of criminal behaviour in the Tipperary South Community Engagement Area, which includes Cahir Garda Station.

"Misinformation, disinformation and fake news risks diverting Garda resources and time from ongoing investigations.

"At the most insidious level misinformation, disinformation and fake news are typically amplified by multiple accounts in order to spread concern within communities.

"An Garda Síochána would continue to appeal to all members of the public to independently verify any content that they are viewing or reading on social media and/ or messaging apps," the statement concluded.
