Gardaí warn filling station owners to stay alert after €400 worth of fuel taken

Gardaí are investigating after several hundred euro worth of diesel was taken from a filling station in county Tipperary.

It’s understood that roughly €400 worth of fuel was stolen during the incident, which occurred at a forecourt in the county.

According to local Gardaí, the suspect arrived at the premises in a van and filled up with diesel before placing the pump into the rear of the vehicle to fill an additional container.

Tipperary Crime Prevention Officer Sgt John McCormack says filling station operators should remain vigilant for suspicious activity on their forecourts.

“A van pulled into a forecourt, filled with diesel and then the suspect put the nozzle into the rear of the van where he filled a container with a substantial amount of fuel. We’d just like to warn filling station owners of this crime – keep an eye on what fuel is going into the vehicle.”

Sgt McCormack also warned that rising fuel prices could lead to an increase in other thefts, including home heating oil being taken from domestic tanks.

Homeowners are being advised to secure their oil tanks where possible and consider installing motion lights or CCTV. He also suggested avoiding filling tanks completely, to reduce potential losses if a theft does occur.
