Safety warning issued by Gardaí to candidates canvassing for General Election
With politicians around the country out canvassing for the General Election at the end of the month, a safety campaign has been launched for candidates to protect themselves on the streets and online.
A safety guidance booklet has been released by An Garda Síochána, Women for Election and See Her Elected to provide information to candidates and their campaign teams on staying safe while canvassing.
CEO of Women for Election, Brian Sheehan said that although many candidates will experience mostly respectful interactions, there can be incidents of intimidation and threatening behaviour.
Commenting on who are most likely to experience such negative interactions, he said: "Women candidates and those from minority backgrounds including people of colour or LGBTQ+ candidates face a disproportionate level of harassment and abuse, particularly online."

Sheehan added: "Political debate and the exchange of diverse political views are key parts of election campaigns. But increasingly, disagreement crosses a line to behaviours that are not acceptable, both online and in-person.
"Civility in political debate and dialogue is essential if we want an environment where more women and people from minority groups feel safe running for election and serving their communities as elected representatives."
Some of the advice issued in the booklet includes not canvassing alone or in the dark and having a code word with your canvassing partner or team in case of any issues arising.
In terms of online safety, candidates are also cautioned to screenshot any harassment on social media and to block and report users.
Candidates are urged to report any incidents to their team as well as Gardaí.
An Garda Síochána have appointed Liaison Inspectors in each division nationwide to help keep people safe who are out campaigning. Garda Divisional Crime Prevention Officers are also available to help with personal safety.
