Tipperary farmers reminded that sprayer testing deadline is here

All boom sprayers greater than three metres and all blast and orchid sprayers must be tested by this Saturday, November 26.

Under the Sustainable Use Directive (SUD) they all must be tested by registered inspectors, ,and any sprayer more than five years old needs to be tested.

With the deadline just upon us people are encouraged to get their sprayer tested, just like getting NCT on your car.

To date, approximately 3,500 sprayers have been issued certification labels by the Department of Agriculture. Any equipment still untested by November 26th, must not be used until it has been tested and approved for use (in receipt of a certification label from the Department).

It is estimated that there are around 30,000 sprayers throughout Ireland, some of these however will be new equipment and will not need to be tested until five years down the line.

Current regulations with regards to the SUD state that all new equipment will have to be tested every five years up to 2020. Following that they must be tested every three years.

FRS Training are currently offering sprayer testing nationwide and have delivered hundreds of pesticide application training courses.

All FRS Equipment Inspectors (testers) are qualified and registered with the Department.

Ahead of testing, sprayers must meet certain pre-test criteria and these all need to be checked off the list in order for the test to proceed.

Follow the checklist below before your sprayer is due to be tested:

n ensure the PTO is fully guarded

n make sure the power unit and the sprayer are connected up and ready for test

n the sprayer is completely clean, both inside and out including filters and filter inserts

n the sprayer has an adequate supply of clean water on arrival

n there is an appropriate hard standing area to test the sprayer with clean water

n the sprayer is in a safe general condition

n there also needs to be acceptance to dispose of the water on site i.e. only clean water will be exiting the machine

n during the test, inspectors will inspect 10 elements on the sprayer including the tank, nozzles, hoses. Pump and filters.
