Work is underway on developing a 997 plot lawn cemetery extension to Calvary Cemetery in Fethard
Carrick-on-Suir Municipal District’s Cathaoirleach has pressed for Fethard cemetery's extension works to be expedited due to space running out in the town’s existing burial ground.
Fine Gael Cllr Mark Fitzgerald issued the appeal at the Municipal District’s September meeting where he informed council officials that people are now being buried at the side grass margins of Calvary Cemetery due to the lack of available grave spaces.
He urged the Council to impress upon the contractor the “urgency” of completing the works required to open the graveyard’s extension.
Planning approval was granted in May last year for the 997 plot lawn cemetery extension on a 2.4 acres site at Killenaule Road, Fethard, which is north of Calvary Cemetery.
Work is underway on developing the cemetery extension and District Engineer Denis Power informed Fianna Fáil Cllr Imelda Goldsboro at the meeting that it was earmarked to be completed in 2025.
Cllr Goldsboro said Grangemockler and Mullinahone graveyards were also full to capacity and requested the Council to take action to increase their size.
She also told Council officials a new committee was required to look after the upkeep of an old graveyard in Ninemilehouse that was visited by a lot of elderly people.
Mr Power said he would look into Cllr Goldsboro’s requests and report back to her.
