A large crowd of singers at a Choir! Choir! Choir! event
If a night singing epic 1980s pop and rock hits with up to 300 other people tickles your fancy then Clonmel's Old St Mary’s Church is the place to be on Friday, March 18 at 7.30pm.
Toronto based choral internet sensations Choir! Choir! Choir! are coming to town to lead this mass singalong that will fill the historic church with the anthems of music icons like Prince, Madonna, Whitney Houston, George Michael and Bon Jovi.
Anyone interested in taking part in this fun evening of singing should get their skates on and book their tickets as they are selling out fast.
“We have about 200 tickets sold and there is a target capacity of 300 for the event so you would want to buy your ticket early,” advised Eamon O’Malley, who is organising the event with his wife Anne. Both are well-known figures in Clonmel’s music community with a proven track record in choral music performance and event planning.
" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Indeed, Choir! Choir! Choir! is the launch event for Eamon and Anne’s new arts and performance initiative, ClonMelody, which they have set up to bring unique music-themed events to the Clonmel and the south Tipperary region.
“We are really passionate about the effect that unique music performers like Choir!Choir!Choir! can bring to people’s lives and we are so excited to share that passion with people in our own locality,” they said.
Old St Mary’s Church is one of just two Irish venues Choir! Choir Choir! will be leading one of their hugely popular mass singalongs during their visit to the country next month. Their only other Irish show is in Dublin’s Olympia Theatre the night after their Clonmel gig.
“Anne and I saw them in Cork a few years ago where they led a crowd of over 600 people and they were great. When they announced their UK and Irish Tour, we chanced our arm, contacted them and we were able to do a deal. We feel very, very lucky to get them to come to a town with such a rich and storied musical heritage as Clonmel,” said Eamon.
He promises Choir! Choir! Choir” will be a music experience like no other.
Eamon describes it as equal parts singing, comedy and community-building and stresses that you don’t have to be an experienced singer or have a musical background to take part in the event. “You just need a bit of enthusiasm and willingness to have a good time,” he explains.
“You get a lyric sheet at the door, C!C!C! guide you through the vocal arrangement and a video of the night is recorded. Everyone has a great night and goes home feeling amazing.”
Choir!Choir!Choir! is led by creative directors Daveed Goldman and Nobu Adilman (aka Dabu) who will be in Old St Mary’s on March 18 to lead the choral event.
“The duo take a non-traditional approach: there are no auditions and the audience is the choir. Just show up and they’ll teach you an original arrangement to a song you love,” Eamon continues.
Choir! Choir! Choir! was founded in 2011 as a weekly drop-in singing event. It has amassed a dedicated and passionate community of singers and a thriving international fan base on YouTube.
They have performed onstage with music legends such as Debbie Harry, David Byrne, Patti Smith, Rick Astley, Rufus Wainwright and the Flaming Lips and in such legendary venues as New York’s Carnegie Hall and Radio City Music Hall.
Choir! Choir! Choir! exists to celebrate music and push the boundaries between practice and performance, artist and audience, offering therapeutic benefits with the ultimate side effect: a powerful community.
