Wellworths store in Tipperary Town has been an anchor store across the region but the doors closed on Main Street this week for the final time. It was an emotional goodbye for Tony and Maureen Walsh who have been trading there for 47 years.
It was a difficult time for their staff - some of whom have worked there for four decades - and it was also hard to believe for customers that frequented the shop across the year, as the popular shop finally closed this week.
The store changed with the seasons, in winter time it was renowned for its array of Christmas goods and then seasonally adjusted to suit the needs of the customers.
The beautiful shop window displays were always a source of pride for all in the town.
The changes in shopping patterns as well as ongoing parking charges and the appeal of out of town shopping without the traffic congestion, are all reasons that have played a part in the shifting patterns of the high street landscape across the country in recent years.
As well as being a blow to the economy of the town, Wellworths has been a feature of Tipperary life since 1954 and iron work products were sold at the site prior to that. The future use of the premises is currently unknown though it is hoped another retailer will step in and continue the proud tradition of retail there.
