Dog owners need to step up and take responsibility, according to councillors.

At last week’s sitting of Tipperary County Council several members raised the issue of dog fouling in the county.

Cllr David Dunne acknowledged that it is a matter of personal responsibility but asked if there was more that could be done.

“It’s getting worse, not better. No matter how many bags or bins you put out,” said Cllr Dunne.

Cashel Cllr Declan Burgess said it is an issue at every MD meeting discussion of the environment. He asked the environment section to look at an awareness campaign.

“It's something I would look at for Cashel,” said Cllr Burgess.

CONTROL OF DOGS

Several councillors also expressed concerns about the ongoing issue of sheep worrying and attacks.

Cllr Mairin McGrath said dog owners need to be mindful of where their dogs are during lambing season.

She asked that the environment section and dog warden create an awareness campaign.

“We have had desperate stories in the past about people not taking responsibility for their dogs and the distress that causes,” said Cllr McGrath.

Cllr Ger Darcy said he supports Cllr McGrath's call as sheep worrying has been an issue in his area.

“It's still something we have to tackle, said Cllr Darcy. Cllr Michael O'Meara said this issue has not gone away. He renewed his call for national legislation to control restrcitive breeds.

Mr Lonergan said a national working group has been set up in response to incidents of sheep attacks in Tipperary and Wexford.

The working group will publish their finding shortly. Mr Lonergan said they will look at the groups findings and recommendations when they are available.

However, he said personal responsibility is still “key”.
