New LGBT+ group for Nenagh has big plans for the future

A new support and social group for LGBT+ people has been set up in Nenagh.

Nenagh LGBT aims to build friendships, provide support and create a community for people from the town and surrounding villages.

Group founder Lily Torode spoke to the Tipperarylive this week about the group and her hopes for it’s future.

OVER COFFEE

To begin with, the group is only for adults.

“Anyone really in north Tipperary or the surrounding areas and nearby counties are free to join. Anyone of any age group 18 and up as far as you like,” said Lily.

Currently, the group meets fortnightly on Sundays for coffee at the Abbey Court Hotel.

PRIDE AND BEYOND
But the new group has big plans for next year or two.

“Long term we have even bigger plans once we get funding and things like that.

“We are planning on getting guest speakers, talking about experiences and stories and possibly running life-skills classes. Things that the rest of the community can join in, not just exclusive to LGBT people. Things anyone can join in on.

“We are just trying to create a sense of community really.”

A future goal for the group is to organise a Nenagh Pride event.

While Thurles does have thriving annual Pride events, Nenagh does not. Nenagh LGBT is hoping to fill that gap.

The group is still getting started, but informal talks have already begun.

“I’ve already heard from a number of people that they would be interested in joining in,” said Lily.

JOINING

The group don’t currently have a base, but meet regularly in the Abbey Court Hotel in Nenagh.

They also have a Facebook group for those who would like to join there.

For those interested in finding out more, Nenagh LGBT can be contacted at nenaghlgbt@gmail.com or on Instagram @nenaghlgbt.

“Just get in touch on Instagram or Facebook or at our email address, and we will try to organise something,” said Lily.
