The best days of our lives: Pupils and staff at Castleiney National School dress up in period costume to mark the anniversary of the school’s opening in 1948 when just 46 pupils came through its doors
Castleiney National School and the local community is celebrating the 75th anniversary of the opening of the local school.
The school opened its doors in 1948 and pupils and staff dressed up recently to remember the 46 children who were enrolled on the first day many years ago.
In the late 1940s, when the foundations were laid for the present national school by the late Bertie Keane (contractor in charge of the construction), a lot of the costs were covered by the Department of Education and the remainder was made up from parish contributions.
Since then, the school has seen many improvements - the installation of electricity, running water and the arrival of the internet.
Since the extension of the school in 2008, the school building is now up-to-date and equipped with the most modern facilities and equipment. These include state-of-the-art IT facilities, a fully equipped sensory room, state-of-the-art resources for all curriculum areas etc.
This has been made possible by fantastic boards of management, parent associations and incredible parish support over the years.
All the children benefit greatly every day.
The school has plenty of celebrations planned for the coming months.
A new podcast series, Iney Edits, went live on Monday, March 25. The pupils have interviewed some esteemed past pupils of the school about their life and times in Castleiney NS and beyond.
The school is also collecting recipes to be put into a recipe book, which will be put on sale to mark the 75th celebrations.
Additionally, a night of celebration will be held in May. The children would love to see as many past and future pupils of CNS in attendance as possible.
