Confirmation candidates celebrate the Holy Spirit at St Mary’s Church of Ireland Nenagh

Confirmation candidates, Ethen, Alex and Sofia release doves to represent the Holy Spirit

St Mary’s Church of Ireland in Nenagh this week held a special ceremony for the four children who will make their Confirmation this year.

Sofia, Ethen, Alex and Scott will make their Confirmation on May 7 at the church.
The theme of Wednesday’s ceremony was the Holy Spirit, and with that in mind, the children released doves and pigeons as a symbol of their faith.

Rev Paul Fitzpatrick who hosted the ceremony told the Tipperary Star that the event was part of the Confrmations programme to prepare the candidates for their big day.

Also in attendance was Rt Revd Michael Burrows. Rt Revd Michael Burrows reflected on the worldwide symbolism of doves.

“Doves speak so much not only of the Holy Spirit but peace and goodwill presenta around us,” said Rt Revd Burrows.
The doves and pigeons were provided by John Nugent of the Haven Hub in Limerick.

He told those gathered that these birds were for racing pigeons and would find their way home in no time. The young guests petted the birds and asked questions.

One bird, Mr Nugent said, was ‘an adventurous spirit’ and, although very young was ready to join the others on the day.

As the birds were released, local musical duo Acoustic Reign played Wind Beneath My Wings.

Following the releasing ceremony, the children and their families went inside to read and reflect.

The Tipperary Star spoke to the children about what their Confirmation means to them. Alex told us it is an important milestone for the young people before they head to secondary school.

“I think it marks that you are getting older and that you are heading to secondary school and it reaffirms your faith, and I think that's really good,” said Alex.

When asked what they most look forward to about starting Secondary School they said making friends.

Although they did say they would miss each other as they had all been together for the past few years.

Ethen and Sofia also said they were looking forward to being able to learn woodwork while Alex said home economics and classics.

The three candidates also wished their friend Scott well.

Scott’s grandmother passed away recently and although he could not be at the ceremony on Wednesday, he was in their thoughts.

St Mary’s Church of Ireland has some events coming up they wish to share.

On Monday, April 1, at 7:30pm, Fr Peter McVerry will speak at the church.

On Saturday, April 29, St Mary’s will hold a prayer walk in Terryglass.

The rehearsal for this year's Confirmation ceremony will be held on May 6 at 11am, with the ceremony itself to be held the following day at 11am.
