Dr Mary Ryan brings her new book home to Nenagh

Endocrinologist Dr Mary Ryan launched her new book in Easons Nenagh on Thursday evening.

It’s Probably Your Hormones covers every area of hormonal health in women from fertility and menopause to sleep, diet and stress.

Speaking at the launch, Dr Ryan called the book’s release a ‘dream come true,’ and she was delighted to celebrate it with friends and family.

“I’m delighted to bring it where I love, home,” she said She told the crowd gathered in Nenagh to celebrate to “read it, enjoy it and live your best life.”

Dr Ryan said she wrote to book to help people understand how they can take care of their heath.

“It's about loving yourself. You have to listen to your body,” said Dr Ryan.

She said she has always been aware of inequality, and when it comes to healthcare, women are not always listened to.

But hormonal health is very important, and failure to recognise that can have devastating consequences.

“For years women were not listened to. They weren’t taken seriously,” said Dr Ryan.

She said she hopes through education, we can break what she called ‘intergenerational patterns’ and that things will be different for her daughter.

“I want things to change for her,” said Dr Ryan.

The launch in Nenagh was the second for the book, with the first held in Dublin. But Mary said it was important to bring it home.

“I was very anxious to bring it back local,” said Dr Ryan.

Dr Ryan’s cousin Ger Ryan spoke on Thursday evening. He said their family have always loved books and that if anyone would write one it would be his cousin.

He praised Dr Ryan’s work on highlighting these issues calling her a ‘warrior’ for women’s health.

“She’s great. She has such great passion, determination and energy,” said Mr Ryan.

Sarah Liddy, editor at Gill said she enjoyed working with Mary and the book was a “pleasure and an education.”

She thanked those at the launch for welcoming the much-needed book.

“This feels like a homecoming,” said Ms Liddy. Ms Liddy told the Tipperary Star:

“We are thrilled to publish the book with Mary, and I think it's a very important book that will benefit a lot of women.

“ I think Mary has done a great service to women in writing the book.”

Dr Ryan too thanked all those who had come out to see her and have their books signed.

She thanked her family for all their support, saying "they have kept me solid".
