Those with a lived experience of cancer can get back outdoors on the Tipperary Blueway

The first-ever You Can Move wellness event will be held on the Suir Blueway in Clonmel this Sunday

This Sunday June 4, National Cancer Survivors Day, marks the first-ever You Can Move wellness event on the Suir Blueway in Clonmel.

This a day for those with a lived experience of cancer to get back outdoors in a safe, supportive environment and to help you find something to love.

There will be specialist and peer support on hand to give you the confidence to return to exercise. The parallel sessions start at 10am.

Kayaking and stand up paddle boarding will be led by physiotherapist Amy Walsh, Clonmel Kayak Club and supported by Canoeing Ireland and Tipperary Sports Partnership.

Sessions at 10am, 11.30am and 1.30pm need to be booked.

Clare Kelly, trauma informed cancer rehab physiotherapist and yoga instructor will guide a series of gentle stretches for the body and yoga breathwork in the yoga hub in Denis Burke Park. These are ideal after a long drive, walk or session on the water and are open to everyone.

Mary O'Donovan will deliver a calming breathwork session at 11.30am. Mary and Clare will teach breathing techniques to help soothe the nervous system and to help lower the heart rate after the walk or fun on the water so you go home feeling balanced and refreshed.

Join the Selfcare Sunday community for a walk along the picturesque Suir Blueway. The volunteer leaders are all cancer survivors and will be there to support you with a group to match your current fitness levels.

Louise Foley will be leading the 10am group and Colette and David from @youcan_ireland cancer support network for people diagnosed in their 20s, 30s and 40s will lead at 11.30am and 1.30pm respectively. The blueway has a flat and wide path with level terrain and is suitable for buggies, manual and powered wheelchairs.

Registration for all activities is essential for insurance purposes. Kayak/SUP places are reserved for those with a lived experience of cancer and are filling up fast.

Yoga breathwork and walking are open to everyone including anyone with a lived experience of cancer - those newly diagnosed, in the middle of active treatment (chemo/radiation/surgery/hormone therapy) cancer survivors, carers and their friends and family.

All ages, all cancer types and stages are welcome and Clare's yoga format and breathwork techniques are suitable for those at risk of or with a diagnosis of lymphoedema.
