Carrick-on-Suir Fianna Fáil councillor Kieran Bourke was unanimously elected the new Cathaoirleach of Carrick-on-Suir Municipal District at the annual meeting of the district's councillors today.

He took over the chains of office from outgoing Cathaoirleach and fellow Carrick-on-Suir councillor David Dunne of Sinn Féin at the meeting in Carrick-on-Suir Town Hall that was attended by Tipperary County Council CEO Joe MacGrath. Tributes were paid at the meeting to Cllr Dunne on the great diligence with which he carried out his role as Carrick MD Cathaoirleach over the past year.

This is Cllr Bourke's first time to serve as Cathaoirleach of Carrick MD. He was the last councillor to serve as Mayor of the former Carrick-on-Suir Town Council before its abolition in 2014 under radical local government reforms.

He was proposed for the position of Cathaoirleach by fellow Fianna Fáil councillor Imelda Goldsboro and seconded by Cllr Dunne, who later in the meeting was unanimously elected as vice-chairman.
