Famine Warhouse 1848 Walk
This coming Saturday, July 23, the 17th Annual Famine 1848 Walk for 2023 will take place from the Young Ireland and National Flag Monument in The Commons to the Famine Warhouse 1848, the OPW National Heritage Museum and visitor attraction.
This Walk commemorates the Famine and the 1848 Rising and remembers all those who suffered, died and emigrated during the Great Famine. The Walk covers 1½ miles.
The person who will lead this year's Walk is local historian Dr. Thomas McGrath from Ballingarry. The Moycarkey Pipers will lead off those present from the Cross.
When the walkers reach the Famine Warhouse, Dr. Tom will deliver the Walk Leader’s keynote speech detailing the events of 175 years ago. This year’s Walk is on the 175th anniversary of the 1848 Rising to the very day. Dr. Tom will also launch Professor William Nolan’s major new work on the Young Ireland movement entitled “Remember ’48” - two volumes, “Young Ireland and the Rising” & “Young Irelanders beyond the Rising”. Copies of Book will be on sale at the launch and refreshments will be served.
The traditional music group ‘Just That,’ whose members are from surrounding parishes and who played last year at this event for the Ukrainian Ambassador, Ms Larysa Gerasko, will play again this year and add a welcome musical dimension to the occasion.
When the speeches are over and refreshments served, the walkers are then free to complete the circuit, if they wish, and return to the starting point in The Commons by the Upper Road.
All are welcome and bring the brolly.
