Willie passed away in UHL, in the early hours of Monday morning, July 10 following a relatively short illness, and the news of his passing was received with a sense of disbelief by his many friends, especially those who soldiered with him be it in the RDF or ONE.
I first met William when he enlisted in the 9th Field Battery (FCA) and he always displayed great enthusiasm both in his role as a gunner and in his role as a signaller.
He was a very intelligent man, and had a great interest in the history of both WW wars.
Having completed his recruit training Willie successfully completed a potential NCO course and was promoted to the rank of Corporal.
We met again in 2003 when he became a member of the Pierse McCan branch ONE, and once again, he displayed the same enthusiasm and was always available when called upon be for colour part’s guard of honours or fundraising. By nature, Willie was a quiet, unassuming man who always kept a low profile.
During my time as secretary of the branch, he was always very supportive of me. In time Willie would assume that role.
Following the standing down of the Pierse McCan branch, Willie continued to serve with the newly formed 3 FAR Association.
On both days of Willies funeral, his comrades in the 3 FARA provided the honours which they have done for former members of the Army, RDF and ONE.
It’s nice to see that tradition continued and always in a dignified way, and I want to thank them for taking ownership of that particular mantle.
On behalf of ONE and on my own behalf, I wish to extend sincere sympathy to Willies Mam, sister Marie, brother Tom, nieces, nephews and cousins, relations, and his comrades in 3FAR Association.
Rest in peace Willie, and thanks for the memories and the support.
