Garda Sergeant Ciarán O'Ráighne is set to embark on the ‘Making Memories Cycle’ for The Alzheimer Society of Ireland
On Saturday August 26, Garda Sergeant Ciarán O'Ráighne, based in Roscrea, will embark on an incredible one-day solo cycle, spanning 236 kilometres (over 146 miles) from Indreabhán in County Galway to Dingle in County Kerry.
The cycle, called 'Making Memories Cycle', aims to raise much-needed funds for The Alzheimer Society of Ireland (ASI).
Ciarán, a Galway man, has chosen this unique cycle route through the country due to his personal connections - he hails from the small parish where the cycle begins in Indreabhán, while his mother, Máire, is from Ventry near the end point of the cycle in Dingle.
Ciarán has been actively fundraising for the ASI since the beginning of this year and his efforts have already yielded an incredible €15,408 in donations, at the time of writing.
Sgt O'Ráighne said:“It is an honour to take on this challenge for The Alzheimer Society of Ireland, a charity that is close to my heart. I’m so grateful to everyone who has supported me on my journey so far. It means the world”.
Regional Fundraising Coordinator Eila Flynn at the ASI said: “We’re so grateful to Sgt O'Ráighne for supporting The Alzheimer Society of Ireland and helping us to maintain vital services and supports for people living with dementia and their carers. We wish him the best of luck on his journey from Indreabhán to Dingle. We’re cheering him on all the way”.
Starting from Indreabhán, Ciarán will journey through Salthill, Galway city, Oranmore, Gort and Ennis, before continuing his route towards Killimer, Co Clare. There, he will embark on a ferry ride to Tarbert, Co Kerry, before continuing through Listowel, Tralee, Annascaul and finally reaching the finish line at O'Flaherty's pub in Dingle.
As part of the fundraiser, a raffle will be held at O’Flaherty’s on the evening of August 26, with great prizes.
