Dolce
A Lurcher is not a breed in its own right. It’s the offspring of any sight hound (e.g. Greyhound, Whippet, Saluki ) mated with another breed.
They come in all sizes different coat types, and the most unusual, stunning colours.
In Ireland, with its long history of Greyhound Racing and Coursing, Lurchers are abundant.
They make up a vast percentage of dogs currently in the care of Irish Rescues and dog pounds, but sadly, for most of them their chances of becoming a family pet is non-existent.
In recent years many were homed overseas. Unfortunately, due to the high volume of these unwanted dogs these homes are be now in short supply.
As a nation, we seem to overlook these graceful, gentle dogs when looking for a pet - and we at Mo Chara are urging people to think differently.
Seen as disposable by some, these sweet, delicate dogs are too often kept in poor conditions, bred relentlessly, then simply discarded when their health or speed fail them.
The vast majority of them end up as strays, they are in poor body condition, burdened with parasites, often with untreated wounds or broken limbs.
It’s a heart breaking fate for any dog!
In all honesty, Lurchers require very little in life to keep them healthy and happy (for this reason, they make wonderful first time pets).
They don’t require very long walks or complicated grooming routines, and they are more often than not, gentle and easy going dogs.
Their homing requirements may vary. Most will live comfortably with another dog.
Because of their back ground some may not be able to live with cats, chickens or small furry pets. However, if you adopt a young enough Lurcher (puppy), they are a blank canvass and are no different to any other puppy.
They can be socialised and learn to live with all other pets.
We currently have a number of Lurches in our care, puppies and adults.
Dogs like Milo and Dolce (pictured above) all looking for their forever family.
