Some of the boarded-up units at Market Place, Clonmel
A Compulsory Purchase Order (CPO) is under consideration for Market Place, the mostly deserted retail area in Clonmel’s town centre where most of the units are vacant and boarded up.
A CPO, which enables local authorities to acquire land or property for development, was suggested by Cllr Michael Murphy at a meeting of Clonmel Borough District.
District Mayor Richie Molloy said it was “a slap in the face” to the people of the town that the owners of the area had “let it go so far”.
District Manager Sinead Carr agreed that Market Place was a very poor reflection of the town.
She said she had “absolutely no issue” with progressing to a CPO in an area where it was warranted.
