More gardaí are needed to tackle the drugs problem in Clonmel, says Cllr Pat English
The reduction in the number of gardaí in Clonmel has been described as “very serious,” considering the drugs problem that exists in the town.
That was stated by Cllr Pat English at a meeting of Clonmel Borough District.
He requested that they would request an update from Garda Chief Superintendent Colm O’Sullivan about this reduction.
They should also seek clarification in relation to the number of gardaí in the dedicated Drugs Unit in Clonmel, and also request the reinstatement of the Community Garda Unit in the town.
Cllr English said it would be “a very sad day” if Clonmel was forgotten about because of a lack of funding, and the town should get its fair allocation of gardaí.
District Mayor Richie Molloy described this as a very important issue.
Community gardaí had served the town well on so many occasions and it was a shame that this unit seems to have been disbanded.
If this unit wasn’t reinstated it would be a big blow to Clonmel.
Cllr Molloy agreed that they would have to keep the pressure on the Chief Superintendent not to forget about Clonmel.
Cllr Siobhán Ambrose said that community gardaí were very important because they were allocated to different areas of Clonmel town.
They were down to two gardaí covering community policing and this was a very sad day, when you consider the size of Clonmel.
Any additional personnel would be welcomed, she said.
