A pedestrian entrance near the sports hub in Clonmel is causing concern
The pedestrian entrance between the Clonmel Sports Hub and the Cashel Court housing estate should be closed, as it had become a source of escalating anti-social behaviour, a local politician has stated.
Cllr Michael Murphy also told a meeting of Clonmel Borough District that a commitment had been given that another nearby vehicular entrance would only be used for large scale or international events.
This was only a farm gate and it needed to be replaced with a higher palisade-type fencing.
He said that a petition about those issues was being gathered by local residents.
Cllr Pat English agreed that a commitment had been given that the entrance would only be open when big events were taking place, and proper palisade fencing should be put in place.
The residents also wanted the pedestrian entrance onto the bypass closed.
District Mayor Richie Molloy said that a commitment had been given that this entrance would only be used for emergency access, and the pedestrian entrance also needed to be closed.
Cllr Siobhán Ambrose said they needed to clarify that this was the responsibility of TUS (Technological University of the Shannon) and not a council issue.
She also said that a “massive sign” was needed at the sports hub to show the facilities available there.
District Administrator Carol Creighton said that TUS had been contacted and had confirmed that they would put a plan in place to rectify the anti-social behaviour at this gateway.
TUS had made a commitment to instal a strong fence or a gateway that would only be used for major events.
