‘Tis the season to be jolly, and nothing encapsulates the festive spirit quite like a Christmas market.
On the weekend before Christmas the Kickham Barracks Plaza in Clonmel was transformed into a bustling hub of joy, laughter and holiday cheer.
The success of the two-day market lay not only in its twinkling lights and charming stalls but in the unique blend of tradition, community spirit and sales that it brought to the plaza.
The selection of handmade crafts and artisan goods, including students’ enterprising products meant people were able to buy lots of Christmas presents.
Sales were so good that many stalls sold out on the first day and didn’t have enough stock for the second day.
The market was organised by Transition Year students from the town’s four secondary schools.
While the students wanted their market to be a commercial venture, they also wanted it to be a communal celebration and the calibre of entertainment was exceptional.

Well-known musicians including Eamon O’Malley, Mary Nugent, Ross Boland and Clonmel man Paul Walsh from the band Royseven took to the stage to entertain the crowds.
However, the performances were not confined to adults, as the students themselves showcased their amazing musical talents.
On Saturday evening there was a very poignant carol service with Fr John Treacy, including soloists from the local secondary schools.
A visit from Santa Claus enhanced the overall experience and attracted lots of excited children.
This Christmas market brought a lot of smiles, created many memories and fostered a huge sense of community togetherness and spirit.
The people of Clonmel were so thrilled to see the stunning plaza being used and would love to see more community events there.
Well done to all concerned on a very successful and rewarding venture.
