Tipperary boy Finn O'Shea is living proof of the great success of organ donation

Finn O’Shea, a kidney transplant recipient from Clonmel and son of a postman, with post office clerk at the GPO, Andy Kavanagh from Coolock, Dublin, who received a heart and kidney transplant

In an initiative to promote public conversation about organ donation, An Post is proudly supporting this week’s national Organ Donor Awareness Week, organised by the Irish Kidney Association in association with Organ Donation Transplant Ireland - www.ika.ie/donorweek.

Attending a photocall at the GPO on O’Connell Street, Dublin, and showcasing the remarkable success of organ donation was kidney transplant recipient Finn O’Shea, from Shamrock Hill, Clonmel, who celebrated his 10th birthday last Monday during Organ Donor Awareness Week.

On the same day he made an appearance on RTÉ’s children’s news News2Day.

Finn is the son of a postman Eoin O’Shea and his wife Lisa from Clonmel. A patient at CHI Temple Street, Finn, who was born with underdeveloped kidneys, underwent a kidney transplant in February 2023, bringing to an end to a lifetime of sickness and the final two years of nightly dialysis treatment.

His mother Lisa said, “Finn’s recovery post-transplant has been remarkable, and he can now enjoy a normal childhood. It’s impossible to express our immense gratitude to the family of his deceased donor for their profound gift to ours.”

Lisa also said, “An Post has shown great compassion in supporting us on Finn’s health journey and allowing Eoin, who works as a postman in Clonmel, to take time off to care for Finn - a shout out to our local postmaster Dick Nugent.

“It’s wonderful to see An Post on such a nationwide level also supporting the organ donor awareness campaign, which offers hope to families like ours”.

At the core of this collaboration between the Irish Kidney Association and An Post is the commitment to raise awareness of organ donation within communities all over the country.

The key message of the campaign is “Don’t leave your loved ones in doubt,” share your wishes about organ donation, #Leave No Doubt.

This simple message captures the vital importance of letting your loved ones know your wishes around organ donation.
