Tipperary Irish Wheelchair Association volunteers mark National Volunteer Week

The Irish Wheelchair Association (IWA) is proud to celebrate National Volunteer Week, recognising and honouring the incredible dedication and hard work of their volunteers across the country including Tipperary. 

Established 64 years ago by volunteers, led by Paralympian Dr. Oliver Murphy, IWA continues to value the commitment and generosity of individuals who selflessly give their time to support members.

Volunteers across IWA play essential roles in IWA-Sport’s clubs, community centres, branches and charity shops to name a few as well as aiding with social activities and outings that would otherwise not be possible.

“As we celebrate National Volunteer Week, Irish Wheelchair Association is proud to honour the extraordinary dedication and hard work of our volunteers," said Ann Marie O'Grady, CEO of Irish Wheelchair Association.

“Volunteers play a crucial role in empowering people with disabilities to actively participate in their communities. We are deeply grateful for the unwavering support of our volunteers who share our passion for making a difference."

Stephen Donovan, a volunteer at Tipperary Warriors, one of IWA-Sport's 20 sports clubs said: “I think IWA-Sports clubs provide a great social aspect for kids. What I love about being a volunteer is the sense of community and creating a real bond with the people here.”

Eighty-five-year-old volunteer Kitty Peters, who has been with IWA for over 35 years, said: "We're like one big happy family. I love them, I love every one of them. Everything is so special to you, and you're not able to do it yourself. I really enjoy being part of it, giving my whole time doing everything I can for people with disabilities.”

The Irish Wheelchair Association is committed to improving the lives of people with disabilities by promoting independence, inclusion, and equality, with volunteers playing a vital role in supporting this mission.
