Most of Clonmel is expected to come to a standstill at around 10.30 on Thursday morning to watch local rower Daire Lynch compete with Philip Doyle in the Men’s Double Sculls final at the Paris Olympics.
The Irish pair continued their impressive run of form at the Games by winning their semi-final on Tuesday morning, ahead of the New Zealand and United States crews, and are now in strong contention to win a medal, after posting the fastest time in both semi-finals.
The other finalists are The Netherlands, Spain and Romania.
Lynch and Doyle were behind the German and United States pairs in the early stages of the semi-final but once they made their move 600 metres from the finish, there was only going to be one outcome.
Hundreds of people flocked to the Kickham Barracks Plaza in Clonmel to watch the semi-final on a big screen, and an even bigger gathering is expected to watch the final there on Thursday morning to cheer on their home town hero Daire Lynch and Philip Doyle from Banbridge, Co Down.
