A beginners course in beekeeping will be held at the College of Further Education, Templemore, E41 FF98, commencing on Monday, February 10.
The lectures will begin on February 10 with an introduction to beekeeping. A week later, on February 17, there will be a lecture on beekeeping equipment.
The third lecture on February 24 will cover the working of the bee colony, with March 3’s lecture covering pollen and nectar sources.
March 10’s lecture will guide participants through controlling bees and working for honey, before the course takes a break for St Patrick’s Day on March 17.
Harvesting the honey will be covered on March 24, before the course rounds out on March 31 with bee diseases, problems and varroa.
All Lectures will start at 8am sharp and will last roughly an hour, with questions and answers after as required.
Following the course, the organisers will have a number of outdoor demonstrations at the association’s apiary.
There, participants shall see full working colonies of bees as hives are inspected.
The cost of €160 also includes membership to the Federation of Irish Beekeepers Association and their monthly magazine An Beachaire posted to the participants, plus insurance to cover apiary activities.
