A 68-year-old New Inn man, who has climbed Slievenamon three years after undergoing a lung transplant, has praised the generosity of the organ donor who gave him a second chance of life.

Frank O’Connor completed the tough hike to the summit of the mountain with members of his family on Saturday, July 19.

The native of New Inn village, who lives in Knocklyon, Dublin, climbed Tipperary’s most famous peak to raise awareness of the life-changing gift of organ donation.

At the summit, Frank proudly flew the Irish Lung Fibrosis Association (ILFA), Mater Hospital Foundation and Tipperary flags.

“Three years ago, I was gifted a miracle — a second chance at life through the generosity of an  organ donor and the incredible transplant team at the Mater Hospital,” he told The Nationalist.

“I climbed that mountain carrying more than a flag — I carried the memory of that gift, the strength of my recovery, and the love of all who have walked this path with me.”

He thanked the ILFA, the Mater Hospital and every person who supports organ donation.

“Your work gives people like me breath, hope, and life,” he said.

Slievenamon wasn’t the only high point of Frank’s weekend. The following day he was in Croke Park to witness the Tipperary Senior Hurling team’s epic All-Ireland Final victory over Cork.
