Independent TD Mattie McGrath believes Kirk's death should "serve as a wake-up call to all of us, here in Ireland and abroad"

Tipperary TD Mattie McGrath has paid tribute to the late right-wing activist Charlie Kirk (31) who died in a shooting while speaking at a Utah campus event this week.

Kirk co-founded the conservative organization Turning Point USA (TPUSA) in 2012. In more recent times he became known as a media personality who would frequently articulate and debate world views in line with the MAGA movement on podcasts and at university campuses across the USA.

The 31-year-old was assassinated in front of a live audience consisting mostly of college students during a live debating event in Utah on Monday.

Independent TD Mattie McGrath has issued the following statement on his death:

"I wish to extend my deepest sympathies to the family of Charlie Kirk and to the people of America following the tragic events that unfolded yesterday. This is, ultimately, a profoundly sad day for democracy and for the principle of free speech.

"No matter what side of the political debate one may stand on, violence is never the answer. The right to speak freely, to challenge ideas, and to engage in open discourse must be protected, not punished. When we lose the ability to disagree without fear, we lose the very soul of democratic society.

"This moment should serve as a wake-up call to all of us, here in Ireland and abroad, where we are witnessing people being arrested or attacked for engaging in political debate, because their views may be seen as offensive. We must teach our young and old alike to value free speech and respectful debate, not to cancel or shut down those we disagree with. Political intimidation and violence in any form must be condemned.

"Let us honour Charlie Kirk’s memory by recommitting ourselves to the values of dialogue, tolerance, and peace, and may his gentle soul Rest in Peace."
