On the Tipperary and Clare border persistent rain and strong winds did little to deter those taking part in the 41st Annual Charity Competition on Lough Derg yesterday. Hosted by the Killaloe, Ballina and District Anglers Association, the event saw thirty-two boats launch despite the testing conditions, though many were forced to return early as the weather worsened.

Danny Sullivan claimed first place with a catch measuring 101cm, followed by Anthony and Rory Kennedy at 100cm, and Shane and Ronan Culhane at 98cm. After the day’s exertions, competitors and supporters gathered at Mills Bar for an evening of celebration and fundraising. Organisers expressed gratitude to all who attended, noting that the continued success of the competition depends entirely on community backing.
A total of €4,840 was raised, with all proceeds going to Milford Hospice and the local Senior Citizens Society. Mills Bar once again provided the venue, with entertainment by Mel Kilkenny. Local businesses contributed raffle prizes, further boosting the fundraising total and underscoring the strong community support behind the event.
Among the evening’s highlights was a spontaneous act by Shane and Sam Lancaster, who decided at the last minute to shave their heads, raising additional funds for the chosen charities. A special mention also went to Chrisy Carey for catching an impressive 70cm salmon during the competition. The fish was safely released to continue its journey, earning applause from fellow anglers.
Despite the wet and windy conditions, the competition once again showcased the enduring community spirit that has defined this long-running event for more than four decades.
