New production blends theatre, music, and video to highlight resilience of working men

Theatre audiences in Tipperary are being invited to step back into the early 20th century with the return of Way Down Underground, a production inspired by Slieveardagh’s mining soldiers of the First World War.

The show will take to the stage at Derrynaflan Theatre in the Horse and Jockey Hotel on Sunday, January 11th at 7pm.

Combining theatre, music, and video, the production explores the lives of men who laboured underground to support their families, capturing the pride, resilience, and hardship that defined the working communities of the era.

While rooted in Slieveardagh’s history, the story reflects experiences familiar to countless communities across Ireland and beyond.placeholder image

Following the success of a sold-out performance in the same venue in August, and with Saturday night’s show already fully booked, the latest iteration promises an expanded narrative.

The new production retains the core story and musical landscape, while introducing fresh scenes and moments that highlight the challenges faced by coalminers and their families as Europe edged closer to war.

Local actors bring both experience and empathy to the roles, with the musical score delivered by members of the Horse and Jockey Singers.

The evening will feature a mix of familiar favourites such as Working Man and Sixteen Tons alongside new songs including When You Were Sweet Sixteen, creating a richer, more immersive experience for audiences.

Organisers are encouraging early booking given high demand. Tickets are priced at €20 and can be reserved through the Way Down Underground Facebook page or by texting 086 196 0157.

Whether attending for the first time or returning for a repeat performance, the production promises a compelling portrayal of courage, community, and the difficult choices faced in a time of war.
