Independent councillor Liam Browne has said he has been contacted in recent weeks by residents and business owners on Main Street, John Street and in the direction of Lowergate Square regarding the recently installed LED street lights.

According to Cllr Browne, a significant number of those affected believe the new fittings are not providing sufficient brightness.

A petition has since been organised and signed by a large number of people who consider the replacement lighting to be too dim for the needs of the area.

In response, Cllr Browne has submitted a motion for consideration at the February meeting of the Municipal District. The motion calls on the Council to undertake a comprehensive technical assessment of the lighting installation.

He said this review should include detailed measurements, including lux levels and lighting uniformity, along with checks on the output and alignment of the new fittings.

“The aim here is simple: to make sure our town centre streets are safely and adequately lit for everyone who lives, works, or walks there,” Cllr Browne stated.

He also thanked those who highlighted the matter and supported the petition, adding that he will provide a further update following the Municipal District meeting.
