Funeral in Chelmsford on March 20 with Cahir mass to honour his memory

RIP: Tributes paid to Tipperary man Philip Cunningham who passed away

It is with profound sadness that the family of Philip (Philly) Cunningham, formerly of 5 Abbey Terrace, Cahir, Tipperary, and more recently of Chelmsford, Essex, have announced his unexpected passing on Sunday, 8 February 2026.

Predeceased by his parents Tommy and Joan, his brothers Francis and Anthony, and his nephew Paul, Mr Cunningham will be deeply missed by his wife Patricia, son Philip, daughter Helen, and daughter-in-law Emma.

He was a devoted grandfather to Lauren, Aidan, Sheku and Isabella. He also leaves behind his sister Breda (Harpur), brother David, brothers- and sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, extended family, and numerous friends across England and Ireland.

Funeral arrangements have been announced. Removal will take place to Our Lady Immaculate Church, 122 New London Road, Chelmsford on Thursday, 19 March, with a Funeral Mass scheduled for Friday, 20 March at 1pm. Burial will follow in the adjoining cemetery. A Mass in his memory will also be celebrated at St Mary’s Church, Cahir, on Saturday, 7 March at 6pm.

The outpouring of sympathy on social media has been substantial. One relative wrote on RIP.ie, “So sorry to hear the sad news about cousin Philly. Sincere Condolences to Patricia, Helen, Phil also Philly’s brother David and sister Breda and all the extended Cunningham and Harpur family on this sad occasion RIP Philly.”

Another contributor offered, “Sincere condolence's to Patricia, Philip, Helen, Breda and David, Nieces and Nephews and the extended families on the sudden loss of Philly. May his gentle soul now rest in peace. Thinking of you all at this very sad time.”

A former friend recalled Mr Cunningham’s sporting achievements in Cahir, writing, “Our deepest sympathy to Patricia Helen young Phillip sister and brother Breda David extended family and so many friends especially in Cahir where he was a star under age footballer he had few equals and was a real sportsman his son has kept the Cunningham name alive in the UK with exceptional success Rest In Peace Phillip Babs Nancy Keating.”

Another message simply stated, “Our sincere condolences to Pat, Phil, Helen and all the Cunningham family on the sad passing of Philly. Our dear friend and neighbour R.I.P.”

Philip Cunningham’s sudden death has left a lasting void among his family, friends, and the wider communities of Cahir and Chelmsford.
