Tipperary County Council hopes to ploughed and salted up to 900kms of roads by this evening.
The council normally looks after 1,000kms of roads in the county with Transport Infrastructure Ireland contractors taking care of the motorways.
While main roads, including the M7 and M8 are passable, the council has advised that the following routes are still impassable:
R497 - Nenagh/Dolla/Milestone
R494 - Ballina/Portroe/Nenagh
R493 - Puckane/Carrigahorig
R438 - Borrisokane/Athlone
With the Status Orange remaining in place for Tipperary until 6pm tonight and snow still falling in some areas, the council has warned that widespread treacherous surfaces are expected due to ice and lying snow.
The council's Severe Weather Management Team convened met at 1pm this Saturday and will remain in contact throughout the next 24/48 hours, if necessary.
Despite the thaw, the council is still emphasising that conditions are and will remain very difficult and dangerous and the public are advised not to travel, to keep off the roads and to continue to excerise high levels of caution.
The message remains to keep off the roads. It will take some time to get all roads open again and people can assist the response effort by avoiding travel and should listen for local updates on road conditions.
Snow plough and salting operations began on all priority national and regional routes at 7.30pm and all outdoor crew have been mobilised around the county since 8pm and working to clear footpaths in the major urban centres and villages throughout the day. Attention will then focus on local primary routes linking villages to the regional routes and all local roads;
Civil Defence crews have been operational since 7am providing transport support to the HSE.
