Some of the singers who take place in the Songs of Family and Home concerts
If you happened to be in the area around Ardcroney any Wednesday night for the last number of weeks , you may have been wondering why the sound of music and singing could be heard floating on the air across the fields.
If you were curious enough to investigate, you would have found the source of this singing was coming from Ardcroney church, where singers were gathered together practising every Wednesday night for an upcoming event, Songs of Home and Family .
This event will take place on Thursday, May 17, in Saints Peter and Paul's Church, Borrisokane at 8pm, and on Thursday, May 24, in St Mary's of the Rosary Church, Nenagh at 8pm.
For this event singers and musicians have come together from Ballywilliam, Borrisokane, Cloughjordan, Lorrha, Nenagh, Portroe, Puckane, Templederry, Terryglass, Toomevara and Silvermines – parishes which comprise the Cois Deirge and Odhran clusters. They will sing songs about home and family, many of which will be familiar such as Home Sweet Home, Green Green Grass of Home, Try a Little Kindness, A Joy for All the Earth, composed by Ephrem Feehily and which is the official hymn for this Special Year of the Family. There will also be some solos and spoken word as well.
This musical event is taking place with two objectives in mind – to raise money for the homeless and to mark this Special Year of the Family and the visit of Pope Francis.
The inspiration for the event comes from the focus on family this year with the World meeting of Families in Dublin, and the visit of Pope Francis, and also from the ever increasing awareness that the homelessness crisis in our country seems out of control with no apparent solution forthcoming.
While on the one hand we are happy and privileged to celebrate home and family and all the positives of home and family life, which thankfully many of us enjoy, it is ironic and poignant that for others this is not the case, and we are shamefully and guiltily aware that many cannot do so because they are homeless.
We are delighted that we will have special guests from the organisations working with homelessness with us on each of the nights. From Focus Ireland we welcome Triona O'Connor, project leader with the Mid-West Services of Focus Ireland based in Limerick, who will be with us on May 17 in Saints Peter and Paul's Church, Borrisokane, and on May the 24 we are delighted that Peter McVerry will be with us for our event in St Mary's of the Rosary Church, Nenagh.
Voluntary donations for Focus Ireland and the McVerry Trust will be very welcome on each of the nights and there will be an opportunity to contribute on both nights. Please keep these dates in mind .
Your support will be greatly appreciated.
