Tipperary woman killed in Monday's road traffic accident named

The Tipperary woman killed in Monday night's road traffic accident on the Old Cork Road has been named as 53 year old Mary Toomey.

Ms Toomey was killed after she was struck by a car while out walking on the hard shoulder on the old N8 Mitchelstown to Cahir road at Kilcoran. 

Ms Toomey was out walking with her young niece who was cycling her bike when the accident occurred on Monday night shortly after 8pm. The little girl is not believed to have sustained any injuries in the incident.

Emergency services were called to assist the victim however Ms Toomey was pronounced dead at the scene.

The tragic incident occurred around 8.20pm on Monday evening. The driver, a man in his 20's, was uninjured.

Ms Toomey worked as a medical secretary at the Convent Road medical practice in Cahir. She was described by locals as a woman with a "constant smile on her face and salute for everyone she met."

"She worked in the local doctor's surgery and she was the glue that kept it all together. There is a major feeling of shock in the town, people are just dumbfounded at this tragic accident."

"She was a proud family person, a really lovely woman, and would have been known to so many people because of her job," they said.

She is survived by her loving and heartbroken family, son Cathal, sisters Anne, Eileen and Cecilia, brothers-in-law Maurice and Jody, niece Eva, nephews James, Joseph, Liam, Anthony and Fionn, extended family and her many friends and neighbours.

Funeral arrangements will be announced later.
