Speeding traffic a danger for pedestrians in Old Bridge area of Clonmel

Pedestrians are "taking their lives in their hands" when using the road crossing at the Old Bridge, a meeting of Clonmel Borough District has been told.

Cllr. Pat English also said that motorists were using the Old Bridge as a route around the town. 

As a consequence the amount of traffic flowing through the area had increased over the last number of years and there was a serious issue with speeding. 

He requested that the council would provide additional signs and flashing lights at the crossing.

Council engineer Eoin Powell said this wasn't a pedestrian crossing, so flashing lights couldn't be installed there. It was provided in order to assist pedestrians crossing the road.

He also said it couldn't be upgraded without losing three parking spaces from outside nearby houses.

District Manager Sinead Carr said they would look at the possibility of carrying out a re-design.
