Carrick-on-Suir's West Gate to be closed to traffic during Historic Towns Initiative renovations

Carrick-on-Suir's West Gate will be closed to traffic for about two days later this month due to renovation works on buildings in that part of the town centre.
Carrick-on-Suir Municipal District Administrator Martin Nolan said the Council has carried out a quick consultation with traders in Main Street and West Gate and their view was that Monday or Tuesday were the best days to close the street to traffic to facilitate the works.
He announced the news at Carrick Municipal District's monthly meeting. He told councillors that traffic diversions will be put in place while the West Gate is closed to traffic.
"There will be proper traffic management of it and we will give notice to the public as early as possible."
Mr Nolan explained the closure of the West Gate area to traffic will be necessary because of upgrading works being carried out on buildings around the West Gate under the Historic Town Initiative Scheme.
The owners of 19 buildings on Carrick-on-Suir's Main Street, Bridge Street and West Gate have signed up to receive Historic Towns Initiative grants worth €130,000 to improve the appearance of their buildings.
The money will assist property owners to paint and clean their buildings, maintain and repair gutters, sash windows, chimneys, signage, roof slates and other minor structural improvement works. The renovations must be completed by November.
Carrick-on-Suir is one of just seven towns in the country to be allocated grant aid under the 2018 Historic Towns Initiative Scheme.
The Heritage Council is providing €110,000 of the funding under the scheme while Tipperary Co. Council has allocated a further €20,000. A further €28,000 for the upgrading of the buildings is to be put up by the property owners.
